Unicoi County Memorial voted to accept MSHA’s proposed acquisition Nov. 28. However, some residents opposed the decision as they favored proposals from other healthcare providers, such as a proposal from Wellmont Health System in Kingsport, Tenn., which called for an expansion at Unicoi County Memorial rather than the downsizing rumored to be in MSHA’s proposal.
According to the report, while the town does not have direct ownership interests in the hospital, the town, as a governmental entity within the county, has the authority to express its view. According to the resolution, the county board “specifically disapproves of the proposed transaction and requires that any such proposal, sale or conveyance of Unicoi County Memorial Hospital or assets be brought to the town of Unicoi Board of Mayor and Aldermen for consideration, vote and approval prior to being agreed to or carried out.”
According to the report, representatives from the board and several citizens plan to visit the state attorney general to present information pertaining to the planned sale and how it was handled.
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the board of Unicoi County passed the resolution to object to the hospital sale. The objection was, in fact, passed by the town of Unicoi.
