UNC Health Care spends $5.6M on consultants, lawyers for Atrium deal

Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care has reportedly spent $5.6 million thus far on consultants and lawyers to assess the system's proposed merger with Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health, formerly Carolinas HealthCare System, according to The Charlotte Observer.

The health system released the financial data at the request of The Charlotte Observer. The largest expense, roughly $2.17 million, is to be paid to The Chartis Group, a Chicago consulting firm, the report states. Officials are also expected to pay roughly $500,000 to the Cain Brothers investment firm for work related to the proposed merger.

A spokesperson for the University of North Carolina System told The Charlotte Observer the system has not yet issued any payments for consulting or other costs related to the proposed combination, and that UNC Health Care will reimburse UNC for Cain Brothers' fee, which will be paid using non-state funds.

A UNC Health Care spokesperson also confirmed to the publication no public funds have been used for the various consultations.

The organizations announced their intent to combine last year.
