Grottenthaler noted that laboratory work that has traditionally been performed has not provided sufficient information, soon enough, for patients and payers to be able to prevent the exorbitant costs of surgical procedures or chronic illness. The cost of treating major diseases continues to escalate.
Researchers at the Milken Institute wrote that “the growing burden of chronic diseases adds significantly” to rising health care costs, predicting a 42 percent increase in chronic disease cases by 2023, according to a report cited by Aetna®.
