A resolution opposing the sale of the hospital passed with 18 votes.

Commissioner Bob Barnwell wanted to declare the hospital as surplus property, which would allow the county to determine the approximate value of the property without being obligated to sell.

Commissioner Barnwell suggested proceeds from a sale could help reduce the county’s $500 million debt. The county’s attorney, however, said the money would have to be earmarked for medical services in the hospital district.
