Harris and Swain hospitals are in a partnership with Haywood Regional Medical Center. Collectively, the three hospitals, along with an outpatient facility, are known as MedWest, which became a part of Carolinas HealthCare System after the facilities partnered. Physicians at Harris and Swain are concerned that Haywood may usurp the role of the other two hospitals in the community, according to the report. Harris has lost money and patients since partnering with Haywood in 2010.
The WestCare board has yet to reach a formal decision to back out of the MedWest alliance, according to the report.
Meanwhile, officials at Haywood Medical Center say they are content with the MedWest alignment.
“I am happy with the way our hospital is going right now,” Cliff Stovall, chair of the Haywood Regional Medical Center board, said in the report. “We aren’t making tons of money, but we are making a little bit and a little bit is good.”
