Timothy Babineau, MD, president and CEO of Providence, R.I.-based Lifespan said in a statement to NBC the health system has submitted a “very compelling, visionary and fair-minded proposal” to Care New England, also in Providence.

“We believe that such a comprehensive healthcare system would enhance the clinical and academic missions of both institutions, resulting in better and more cost-effective care for patients in Rhode Island and the region,” he said.

Dr. Babineau said the two health systems have had several discussions regarding a potential merger, beginning in 1983, according to the report.

Care New England, which consists of four hospitals and three health facilities, is reportedly considering offers from several interested parties. The health system had previously been engaged in merger discussions with New Bedford, Mass.-based Southcoast Health System, but discussions fell apart last October.
