Boston Medical Center, the largest safety net hospital in Massachusetts, and Tufts Medical Center in Boston have confirmed they are discussing a merger, according to a Boston Globe report.

Although full change-of-ownership deals dropped this year, merger and acquisition activity is expected to pick back up in 2015, says Jordan Shields, vice president of Juniper Advisory, an investment bank that works exclusively with hospitals and health systems.

For-profit Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare Corp. has plans to purchase Waterbury (Conn.) Hospital as well as St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury, but proposed conditions for the purchase may stand in the way, according to a Hartford Courant report.

Franklin, Tenn.-based hospital healthcare giant Community Health Systems announced plans to close the sale of 133-bed Newport, Ark.-based Harris Hospital and its outpatient facilities early in the first quarter of 2015, according to Arkansas Business.
