Mergers and acquisitions improved patient care outcomes for rural hospitals, a new study published in JAMA Network Open suggests.

Ten transactions involving hospitals and health systems have been announced, finalized or advanced since Sept. 1:

Premera Blue Cross and Wenatchee, Wash.-based health system Confluence Health have reached a multi-year contract.

Redding, Calif.-based Shasta Regional Medical Center is cutting its contract with Anthem short because of alleged contract violations, the provider said. 

Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health plans to sell its 49-bed hospital in Williamston, N.C., to Dallas-based Affinity Health Partners, a Quorum spokesperson confirmed to Becker's Hospital Review on Sept. 16. 

Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare and Broomfield, Colo.-based SCL Health have signed a letter of intent to merge, the organizations announced Sept. 16. 

Before Susquehanna Health joined Pittsburgh-based UPMC in 2016, it shut down partnership discussions with Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger, according to court filings cited by the Patriot-News.

Private equity firm KKR and real estate investor Cornerstone Companies will establish a joint venture to acquire and develop a portfolio of healthcare properties, the companies said Sept. 15.

Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare has entered into or completed several acquisition and divestiture agreements since May 1.

Portland-based MaineHealth expanded its clinical affiliation with Lewiston, Maine-based St. Mary's Health System.
