NYU Langone Med Center, Continuum Health Discuss Merger

NYU Langone Medical Center and Continuum Health Partners, both based in New York City, have signed a confidentiality agreement in their preliminary discussions toward a possible affiliation or merger, according to the minutes from a NYU Faculty Senators Council meeting (pdf).

Continuum is a non-profit hospital system comprised of New York-based Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital and New York Eye & Ear Infirmary.

Under the potential agreement, Continuum would offer NYU teaching opportunities in ambulatory care and top specialties in ophthalmology, according to the report. NYU would offer Continuum capital resources and a better position to assume risk.

If a new, combined entity were to be created, NYU would be the academic home to faculty and residency programs. Clinical faculty would become faculty of NYU and Continuum residences would eventually migrate to NYU, according to the report.

Currently the discussion period is to end late spring. In the next step, the boards would sign a non-binding agreement and a decision to move ahead would be made no sooner than end of calendar year.
