Representatives from United Nurses and Allied Professionals oppose what they call an arbitrary merger deadline set by the state and are asking Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee to intervene. The DOH ruled the merger application incomplete and gave the two institutions one last chance to file, extending the deadline to Jan. 11.
The union argues that if the merger falls through, the Woonsocket hospital, which is the second largest employer in the city and has one of the busiest ERs in the state could close, according to the report.
