Employees Want Investigation Into Cash-Strapped Peninsula Hospital in New York

Nurses and other staff members of Peninsula Hospital in Far Rockaway, N.Y., gathered to rally against the hospital’s plans to shutter by Oct. 25, according to a Daily News report.

The hospital reportedly owes nearly $13 million to vendors, $2 million to the nursing home and still more to the union. Hospital officials submitted a plan for closure to the state Health Department last week, but hospital employees are suspicious of whether the hospital’s planned closure is only about financials.

“I believe that there are shady business practices at Peninsula Hospital that in part have led to Peninsula’s demise,” said Dr. Wayne Dodakian, MD, a physician at the hospital.

He is joined by other hospital employees who are asking the state Health Department to investigate the hospital. Meanwhile, Peninsula Hospital officials refuted those claims, citing other recently shuttered hospitals in the area.
