Yesterday, Southaven, Miss.-based Baptist Memorial Healthcare announced it would not appeal a decision by the state’s Department of Health to award a certificate of need for a 100-bed hospital to Methodist.

Area residents have advocated for nearly 10 years for a hospital in the area. Methodist filed a letter of intent for the hospital last year following the Department of Health’s decision in July 2009 to allow counties with more than 140,000 residents to have two hospitals, according to the report.

Construction on the hospital is excepted to begin early next year, with an anticipated completion by 2013, according to a report by WREG News.
