Gaithersburg, Md.-based Adventist HealthCare is no longer in talks to acquire Howard University Hospital, a 482-bed academic hospital in Washington, D.C.

Adventist, which has managed Howard University Hospital since 2020, will phase out its management services agreement by February 2026. Both the hospital’s MSA and the faculty practice plan’s MSA — launched in February 2023 and centered on the hospital’s employed physician network — will end at that time.

“While Howard and Adventist have mutually agreed to discontinue Adventist’s management of the hospital and faculty practice plan, the university will continue efforts to secure a future partnership,” Howard University President Ben Vinson III, PhD, said in a news release. “Howard’s plan to build a much-needed new, state-of-the-art hospital that continues to offer the best of care, academic medicine, research and training will not be interrupted by the change in management.”

Hospital operations will transition back to Howard University as the MSAs wind down.

“While we were not able to find a solid path forward to a long-term agreement, the partnership successfully resulted in key improvements that will continue to serve all those seeking hope and healing,” Adventist President and CEO John Sackett said.
