Two Massachusetts Physician Groups in Talks to Merge; Deal Would Cover 1M Patients

Two of Massachusetts’ largest private medical practices are in talks to merge into a physician-run group that would cover nearly one million patients — a marketplace standing that could leave them aggressively negotiating with hospitals, according to a Boston Globe report.

Newton-based Atrius Health, which includes 844 physicians, is in talks with 250-physician Worcester-based Fallon Clinic. Both share the same EMR systems, billing systems and patient-appointment software.

Some healthcare experts say a strong physician system may “keep hospitals in check,” according to the report. Others say the merger of two high-quality group practices will make an attractive clinical and business partner to Massachusetts hospitals, which are rapidly consolidating or expanding their physician networks.
