Florida Hospital District to Sue Former Attorney After Failed Merger

Southeast Volusia Hospital District, which operates Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., is seeking a law firm to represent it in a suit against its former attorney after a planned merger with Adventist Health System’s Florida Hospital in Orlando was unwound, according to an Orlando Sentinel report.

In February, a Circuit Court judge overturned the $80 million merger, ruling the 21 closed-door meetings surrounding the merger were in violation of the state’s Sunshine Law and that the two groups’ attempts to “cure” the violations by reholding the meetings were not an appropriate remedy.

The hospital district has reportedly asked six law firms for formal proposals to take the case.
