D.C.'s United Medical Center Acquired by City for $20M

United Medical Center in Washington, D.C., has been acquired by the district for $20 million in an auction last week that drew no other bids, according to a report by the Washington Post.

D.C.'s Attorney General Peter Nickles foreclosed the property in June after the hospital's owner, Specialty Hospitals of America, defaulted on its debt, which totals more than $55 million, according to the report.

The city took immediate possession of the hospital on Friday following the auction and named five acting board members. The hospital ownership deal marks the first time the city has owned a hospital in nearly a decade, after the closing of D.C. General in 2001 following financial troubles.

Some D.C. residents have criticized the move, saying the city faces too much financial risk by taking control of the former Greater Southeast Community Hospital, the only hospital serving the southeast area of the district, according to the report.
