Board Members at Florida’s North Broward Unsure About Non-Profit Transition

The majority of North Broward Hospital District’s board members want to rescind their Sept. 10 votes to turn the $1.1 billion-a-year public health system, located in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., into a non-profit, according to a Sun Sentinel report.

Rather, the board members favor studying the transition and which model it will take. Those board members who do support the transition to non-profit are calling for another vote on Oct. 20. Public hearings on the proposal will also be held.

A board auditor reported the district could lose up to $80 million in grants if the hospital is privatized, according to the report. There are also concerns in regards to leadership and the oversight of tax spending.
