The venture — called BlueRock Therapeutics — represents the largest Series A financing for a biotech company to date. Cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative disorders will be the initial projects of BlueRock, which will have operations in Toronto, New York and Boston.

“We have closely tracked the field of regenerative medicine for the past five years and believe the time is right to invest in stem cell therapies given recent breakthroughs in cell differentiation, manufacturing and engineering,” Jerel Davis, PhD, managing director at Versant Ventures, said in a prepared statement.
