Wisconsin physician pens children's book to inspire reading, physical activity

After spending time with her young daughter, one Wisconsin physician was inspired to write a children's book to encourage children to read and to increase their physical activity, WMTV-15 News.

Kathleen Antony, MD, a faculty member in the obstetrics and gynecology department at Madison-based University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and an OB-GYN physician at Madison-based UnityPoint Health-Meriter, said reading has been an integral part of her relationship with her daughter.

Dr. Antony said the idea for the book My Shadow came after she spent the day with her daughter at a local park. She said during the outing, her daughter became fascinated with her own shadow. The accompanying poem "just built itself from there," Dr. Antony told WMTV-15 News.

"My goal was to really have [the book] be as helpful for children as possible," said Dr. Antony. "It not only inspires kids to read, but [to] also get out [outside] and experiment with their shadow[s]."

Dr. Antony said all of the proceeds for the book will be donated to two literacy foundations.
