The residency is the hospital’s first postgraduate program. It already hosts students from the Athens-based Georgia Regents University-University of Georgia partnership, according to the report.

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents matched the hospital in raising about $550,000 to fund infrastructure for the program, which includes building a place for residents to sleep and shower while on duty, according to the report.

More than 1,300 medical school students have applied for spots in the St. Mary’s program and 100 are being interviewed.
