The new program, which is expected to create and fill 10 spots by July 2017, was created to help combat the growing physician shortage in Florida and help the hospital progress toward becoming a teaching hospital, according to Steve Taylor, MD, CMO of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System.
The residency will last three years and include training in internal medicine and inpatient and outpatient rotations in cardiology, pulmonology, infectious disease, gastroenterology, critical care and other subspecialties, according to the report.
The hospital will need to raise several million dollars to establish curriculum, staff and infrastructure to host the program and be accredited, Dr. Taylor said, according to the report.
