Saint Louis University School of Medicine awarded $6.6M for primary care program

Saint Louis (Mo.) University School of Medicine will receive $6.6 million from the Los Angeles-based Everest Foundation to bolster primary care programs, according to St. Louis Public Radio.

The funds will be used over a 10-year period for a visiting research fellowship, two family medicine residency positions, three internal medicine residency positions and seven annual scholarships for family physicians seeking a master's degree in public health, according to the report.

The Everest Foundation, which is part of the Residents Medical Group consulting firm, will choose one of the seven scholarship recipients annually and provide a pool of candidates to be selected for the fellowship. Their level of involvement in the selection process is a bit uncommon, Michael Nilsen, a spokesperson for the Association of Fundraising Professionals told St. Louis Public Radio.

The additional residency positions will double the size of the school's program preparing physicians to care for underserved populations, Dr. David Schneider, the chair of SLU's department of family and community medicine, said in the report.
