Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital first in NJ to open LGBT health center

Somerville, N.J.-based Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital opened Monday a family health center with services tailored to the LGBT community — the first of its kind in the state.

PROUD Family Health offers primary care for children and adults, hormone therapy and monitoring, HIV care, health education, counseling, support and referrals for behavioral health services. The name PROUD stands for promoting respect, outreach, understanding and dignity, and it comes from the hospital's business resource group, which is a group of employees who lead LGBT outreach and advocacy.

"We want every patient who comes through our doors to feel welcome and to be able to get the care that they need at all stages of their lives," Tony Cava, chief administrative officer at RWJUH's Somerset campus, said in a statement. "We are proud to be leading the way in New Jersey in providing primary healthcare services for the LGBTQIA community."

The center will be open for limited hours on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will accept Medicare, Medicaid and most major insurance plans.
