Retired orthopedic surgeon undergoes hand surgery he developed

Richard Burton, MD, an 80-year-old, retired orthopedic surgeon, recently received a procedure to relieve arthritic pain in his thumbs. The procedure, which Dr. Burton devised in 1986, was performed by a surgeon he trained, according to the Democrat & Chronicle.

In the summer of 2016, Richard Miller, MD, performed the first of two surgeries on Dr. Burton to relieve pain in his thumbs at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center. Once Dr. Burton has fully recovered from the first procedure, Dr. Miller will perform the surgery on the other hand.

Dr. Burton developed the procedure — appropriately penned the "Burton procedure" —during his time at Cleveland Clinic and at the University of Rochester Medical Center. For his contributions to the field of hand surgery, Dr. Burton was named a Pioneer of Hand Surgery in 2016 by the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand, according to the Democrat & Chronicle. The honor is bestowed once every three years.
