Physician Integration: Transitioning from 'Pacman' to Millennial Recruitment

In a session at the Becker's Hospital Review Annual Meeting in Chicago on May 15 moderated by Molly Gamble, managing editor of Becker's Hospital Review, panelists discussed the evolution of physician alignment.

Allan Fine, senior vice president and chief strategy and operations officer of the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, and Mark Smith, president of physician permanent placement at AMN Healthcare Services and president of Merritt Hawkins & Associates, both agreed that hospitals have started to take a more strategic approach to physician alignment.

"We used to see the Pacman approach of trying to acquire as many full-time physicians," said Mr. Fine. "We have a different perspective now….We look a lot more than we desire to partake in."

While physician acquisition and integration is much more strategic now, "at the end of the day, employment is without question the prevailing model," Mr. Smith said, adding he sees much more cooperation between physicians and hospitals than before.

Panelists also noticed a marked shift in recruiting the new generation of millennial physicians.

Mr. Smith said a key factor in attracting millennial physicians is flexibility and allowing new physicians to somewhat build their jobs with certain roles and responsibilities, something the healthcare environment has not typically done in the past.

"You can't look at a baby boomer and a millennial in the same fashion," Mr. Smith said.
