Penn Medicine Launches New Value-Based Care Program for Residents

Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine is unveiling a new teaching program for physician trainees to practice value-based care.

The program, called VALUE, is to be offered to residents at University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine and facilities within the University of Pennsylvania Health System. VALUE stands for:

• Validation and variability
• Affordability and access
• Long-term benefits and less side effects
• Utility and usability
• Effectiveness and errors

"Our model can be used to train young physicians to assess the benefits of medical interventions, with the goal of selecting those that generate high value and reduce unnecessary costs," program co-developer Mitesh Patel, MD, MBA, said in the news release. "These include deciding what medical tests to order, selecting the most cost-effective medications to prescribe and discussing with patients whether or not to have surgery."

Along with the VALUE program, residents at Penn Medicine also have access to the Center for Evidence-Based Practice, which is one of the only comparative effectiveness centers in the country that's based in an academic health system.
