Athens-based Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine would stay in Athens but be housed in different buildings. The idea for the project, which is part of OU’s Comprehensive Master Plan, came about when the medical school received funds from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation in 2011.

“Our medical education, research and care programs are growing and changing to keep pace with massive changes happening in patient care,” said Kenneth Johnson, DO, dean of the medical school, in an email, according to the report. “We’ve outgrown our facilities in Athens.”

Not only could the move be useful for classroom space, but it could also free up space for Ohio University’s student dormitories.

For now, the project will have to wait. The medical school is currently in a feasibility phase of the project and will eventually move to a design phase. HCOM hopes to complete the project within the next 10 years.
