Together, Inova and the University of Virginia will accomplish the following four goals.
- A regional campus of the UVA School of Medicine at Inova. The campus will allow medical students to finish their clerkship and post-clerkship education at Inova facilities.
- A research partnership to advance the InovaCenter for Personalized Health’s Global Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Institute. The Institute plans to recruit scientists to research genomics, bioinformatics and precision medicine, among other topics.
- A research partnership between the Inova Schar Cancer Institute and the UVA Cancer Center. Inova and UVA hope to gain designation by the National Cancer Institute as a comprehensive cancer center.
- The potential creation of a biomedical investment vehicle. Inova and UVA may potentially commercialize the vehicle.
“UVA is one of the most prestigious research universities in the country and Inova is one of the largest, most successful healthcare systems,” Inova CEO Knox Singleton said in a statement. “This partnership leverages the complementary strengths of two institutions committed to providing the most advanced treatments and prevention strategies to the communities we serve.”
UVA President Teresa Sullivan, PhD, agreed, stating that the “affiliation can help us better accomplish our missions in education and research,” she said.
Officials from Inova and UVA plan to finalize a definitive agreement later this year.
