The health system kicked off the new year by ending all sales of sugar-sweetened beverages, including soda; sugar-sweetened teas, energy drinks and water; and chocolate and strawberry milks. Geisinger officials replaced the beverages with healthier options, including pure fruit juices and zero-calorie sodas, among others.

Officials said such beverages represent leading contributors to various health conditions such as obesity, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

“By eliminating [sugar-sweetened beverages], we can create wellness opportunities and improve the overall health of our communities,” officials said.
