Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine graduates first class with new name

The former Commonwealth Medical College's more than 150-member graduating class was the first group of graduates to see 'Geisinger' on their diploma during their commencement ceremony Sunday, according to the Times-Leader.

The Scranton, N.J.-based college rebranded as the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine after the medical school and Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System finalized their partnership Jan. 2.

Approximately 69 master's students and 87 Doctor of Medicine students received their degrees at this year's ceremony. Once the degrees were conferred, Steven Scheinman, MD, president and dean of the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, led the students in reciting the school's oath. The school's tradition is based on the industry tradition of physicians reciting the Hippocratic Oath at the start of their medical careers.

David Feinberg, MD, president and CEO of Geisinger Health System also spoke at the ceremony, expressing his excitement at the graduates' — and the school's — future, according to the report.
