Founding dean of Virginia Tech medical school to retire: 5 things to know

Roanoke-based Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine founding Dean Cynda Ann Johnson, MD, revealed plans to retire Feb. 27 after 10 years at the institution.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Johnson.

1. Dr. Johnson will continue in her role as dean this year while officials search for her replacement.

2. During her tenure at the university, Dr. Johnson established the first department of interprofessionalism at a U.S. medical school. As part of the four-year curriculum, students take classes with other health professionals to learn more about their respective professions within the medical industry.

3. Prior to arriving at Virginia Tech, Dr. Johnson served in a number of clinical, research and academic leadership roles, including as the founding dean of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.

4. Along with her academic and clinical positions, Dr. Johnson also previously served as president of the American Board of Family Physicians and the American Board of Medical Specialties.

5. Dr. Johnson earned her bachelor’s degree from Stanford (Calif.) University and earned her medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in Los Angeles.
