2019 was the final year for the AOA Match program. The organization has spent the past several years integrating with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to create a single accreditation agency for graduate medical education.
Under the unified system, DO and MD graduates will participate in the National Resident Matching Program to match into accredited residency programs and hospitals nationwide.
Three findings on 2019 DO Match Day:
1. Some 54 percent of participants matched into accredited residency programs this year, the AOA said.
2. Of those who matched, 56 percent chose residency programs in family and internal medicine.
3. In total, 886 osteopathic medical school seniors and recent graduates received placements in 21 specialties this year. Most of those participating in Match Day were matched into family medicine residencies (34 percent), followed by internal medicine (22 percent), orthopedic surgery (12 percent) and general surgery (7 percent).
