Dean of UPMC-affiliated med school to step down

Arthur Levine, MD, dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, announced his intention to resign from his role Jan. 23, Trib Live reports.

Dr. Levine, who began his tenure at the institution in 1998, will also step down from his role as senior vice chancellor for health sciences.

University officials said Dr. Levine, 82, will remain at the institution and open a new laboratory for Alzheimer's disease research. He will continue in his roles as senior vice chancellor and dean until his successor is named.

Dr. Levine's efforts led to the creation of the nation's first department of critical care medicine in 2002, and several other departments in immunology, computational and systems biology, structural biology, developmental biology, and biomedical informatics, university officials said, according to the report.

Under his leadership, the medical school also developed close relationships with medical institutions in China and Kazakhstan.
