Chinese hospital treating Nobel laureate invites US cancer specialists to help

The First Hospital of China Medical University in the Liaoning province invited cancer specialists from the U.S., Germany and elsewhere to join Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo's team of cancer physicians, according to The New York Times.

The country's justice department posted the invitation on its website July 5. It is unclear which foreign physicians were invited and if they had responded to the invitation, according to the report.

Mr. Liu, 61, was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer in May and granted parole from prison to a hospital late last month. He was sentenced to serve 11 years in prison in 2009 after calling for democratic reform in China.

Mr. Liu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 for his "long and nonviolent struggle for fundamental human rights in China," The NYT reports.

Chinese officials reportedly denied Mr. Liu permission to seek treatment abroad last week.
