Charlie Gard dies at 11 months

Eleven-month-old Charlie Gard, the infant with an incurable medical condition whose parents sought to obtain treatment in the U.S., died July 28 –– one week before his first birthday, according to USA Today.

Charlie's mother, Connie Yates, confirmed the baby's death Friday.

"Our beautiful little boy has gone, we are so proud of you Charlie," Ms. Yates said, according to the report.

The infant died in a London hospice facility after his parents and his physicians at London-based Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children failed to agree on his end-of-life care. He was transferred to the undisclosed facility July 27 after a U.K. High Court ruling.

His parents previously expressed their desire to have Charlie transferred to their home. However, GOSHC physicians said the intensive ventilation required to keep the boy alive could only be provided in a hospital setting.

Charlie was diagnosed with infantile onset encephalomyopathic mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, an incurable autosomal recessive disorder that causes a drop in an individual's mitochondrial DNA in affected tissues. The disorder left Charlie with significant brain damage and unable to breathe without a ventilator.
