The six-member class will complete a five-year program in general surgery. Three of the residents are first-years, while the remaining three are second-years. Residents will engage in a community orientation seminar in July, followed by classes in leadership, patient safety and systems of care.

Officials said they received 700 applications for the six slots. Funding for the program will come from hospital revenues. The introduction of a formal residency program may make it easier for the hospital to win rate of approval increases through Maryland’s Health Services Cost Review Commission, according to the report.

While the hospital has hosted medical residents from area teaching hospitals “for some time,” the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education formally approved AAMC’s proposal for the program in 2014.

Officials said they hope to expand the program to include specialties in internal medicine and other fields. Officials will also begin recruiting the next class of residents.
