Poughkeepsie, N.Y.-based Vassar Brothers Medical Center was approved to form a general surgery residency program for 2019, according to the Daily Freeman.
VBMC President Ann McMackin said May 8 officials also expect the 365-bed hospital to be approved for other residency programs, including internal medicine, family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, emergency and psychiatry.
"It takes us from being a community hospital, with great, advanced tertiary care, to a teaching hospital. And when you have [physician] residents, it raises the bar for everybody," Ms. McMackin said. "It's ongoing teaching, ongoing education and it also trains physicians who love the Hudson Valley and will hopefully stay here and grow their practices in our region."
The residency programs will be spread across parent company LaGrangeville, N.Y.-based Health Quest's four hospitals, with the largest programs held at VBMC, according to the report. The programs are expected to enroll a combined 220 residents.
