3 key recommendations from ABIM's assessment of MOC

The American Board of Internal Medicine's Assessment 2020 Task Force released a report Wednesday that provides a number of possible avenues for the redesign of ABIM's Maintenance of Certification and Certification programs.

"Feedback collected by the Assessment 2020 Task Force is very consistent with feedback ABIM is hearing from the community regarding the MOC program," Richard Baron, MD, president and CEO of ABIM, said in a statement. "These recommendations are meant to be a catalyst for further discussion and can ultimately lead to an improved MOC program for diplomates."

The report, entitled "A Vision for Certification of Internal Medicine in 2020," includes the following three key recommendations.

1. Substitute the 10-year MOC exam with more meaningful assessments.

2. Ensure these assessments address cognitive skills, or clinical knowledge, as well as technical skills, or the ability to adequately perform the procedures of the profession.

3. Explore the need for more specialized certification without requiring maintenance of underlying certificates.
