UMass Memorial in Massachusetts to Lay Off 4 Registered Nurses

UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Mass., plans to lay off four registered nurses that serve as lactation consultants in December, according to a Worcester Telegram & Gazette report.

The affected nurses' work will be outsourced to non-nurse consultants who will provide breastfeeding education. The report did not include a reason for the layoffs, though the Massachusetts Nurses Association has sharply criticized the hospital for its alleged "callous move to cut costs at the expense of quality patient care."
