Dr. Gawande’s name may sound familiar as he has been published twice in The New Yorker, writing on the exorbitant cost of healthcare in America.

Ms. Sullivan responds to his most recent piece “Overkill. An avalanche of unnecessary medical care is harming patients physically and financially. What can we do about it?”

According to the article and Dr. Gawande’s 2010 report, healthcare waste accounted for more than the United States’ entire budget for K-12 education.

While Dr. Gawande hints at a few sources of these unsettling numbers, he takes note to say “What can we do better?”

Ms. Sullivan writes in the article, “We are heading in the right direction…but we can’t pause too long; we’ve got a long way to go.”
