Since the spring, Wake Forest Baptist has already cut more than 400 positions through attrition and retirement. It will eliminate another 475 by June.
Hospital CEO John McConnell, MD, said healthcare workers — including laboratory and radiology technicians, contract nurses and clerical workers — made up two-thirds of the cuts. A handful of full-time nursing positions were eliminated while the rest will come from administration, according to the report.
Dr. McConnell said the reductions are not prompted by financial problems, but are part of a plan to prepare for an anticipated 10 percent cut in reimbursement from federal programs and private payors.
Wake Forest Baptist includes three hospital campuses and a medical school.
