Virginia legislature passes Medicaid expansion, bill awaits governor's approval

The Virginia Senate narrowly passed a budget May 30 that included Medicaid expansion after five years of Republican resistance to the measure, according to The Hill.

The bill now awaits approval from Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam. The Virginia House has passed a budget including Medicaid expansion three times this year, but Republicans in the Senate blocked the first two attempts.

"The loudest voices in this long-standing conversation on Medicaid expansion have been those of Virginians. We have heard you. Thank you," Mr. Northam tweeted.

The expansion will provide coverage to nearly 400,000 more Virginians, but will include Republican-backed stipulations such as work requirements and premium payments for Medicaid enrollees living above the federal poverty line.
