UPMC spokesperson Paul Wood told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review the system’s “growth pace has been very aggressive, and we’re just reducing that rapid pace.”
UPMC includes about 58,000 employees and typically hires 2,000 workers per year. This fiscal year, the total number of hires could be as low as zero and will not exceed 500, according to the report.
Mr. Wood said UPMC is being cautious in its hiring as it expects more cuts in reimbursements from private and governmental insurers, according to the report.
