Since Hamot Medical Center joined the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center system in February, the Erie, Pa., hospital has added 225 more full-time employees to its roster, according to an Erie Times-News report.
The bump in employment is not UPMC Hamot’s only accomplishment this year. The hospital also built its own free-standing women’s hospital and broke even in finances for fiscal year 2011. It earned $486 million treating patients, spent nearly half that amount on operational costs and posted a $14 million profit.
On the other hand, the hospital’s uncompensated care grew by $9 million to $44 million. It is also in the crossfire of a contract dispute between UPMC and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. UPMC Hamot’s contract with Highmark is slated to expire June 30, 2013 if the parties cannot reach a deal.
