U-M opens $7M critical care center

Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan Health System announced Monday the opening of its new $7 million, 7,800-square foot Massey Emergency Critical Care Center.

The Massey EC3, as it's called, has five trauma bays and nine patient rooms. It was built to help meet UMHS growing demand for emergency critical care, which has increased 24 percent in five years, according to a statement.

Roughly one-third of UMHS emergency patients are admitted to a hospital bed, according to the statement, and the number of UMHS patients who are admitted to the ICU from the emergency department has steadily risen 10 percent each year for the past five years.

The new advanced emergency department may help reduce the number of patients who will need to go to the ICU, according to the report. It will also be used for educational purposes, to test new clinical strategies, devices and equipment, and to train emergency critical care fellows and other critical care physicians and nurses.
