Eric Beyer abruptly stepped down from the CEO post last month. Mike Wagner, MD, CEO of the Tufts Medical Center Physicians Organization, was named interim CEO.
Ellen Zane, former CEO and current vice chair of the board, was tapped to oversee the leadership transition. But instead of embarking on an executive search, Ms. Zane told the Boston Business Journal that Tufts has launched a new “deep dive” in its strategic planning.
“Things are changing so quickly in this market that the minute you complete a strategic plan, it’s obsolete,” Ms. Zane said in the report. As part of its strategy, Ms. Zane also said Tufts is more focused on adding physicians rather than hospitals to its system.
The Boston Business Journal said Tufts’ delayed executive search may boost Dr. Wagner’s chances of becoming the next permanent leader of the hospital, as he will have more time to prove his value.
