Top 15 States With the Most Registered Nurses

California has the highest number of employed registered nurses, according to State Health Facts, a project of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.

The data is compiled from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ State Occupational Employment Statistics Survey. The most recent findings of the survey are from May 2011.

According to the data, the total number of employed registered nurses in the U.S. is 2.7 million. The top 15 states with the highest number of employed registered nurses are:

1. California — 250,230 nurses (9.2 percent of the U.S. total)
2. Texas — 184,890 nurses (6.8 percent of the U.S. total)
3. New York — 176,180 nurses (6.5 percent of the U.S. total)
4. Florida — 164,800 nurses (6 percent of the U.S. total)
5. Pennsylvania — 130,740 nurses (4.8 percent of the U.S. total)
6. Ohio — 124,790 nurses (4.6 percent of the U.S. total)
7. Illinois — 123,770 nurses (4.5 percent of the U.S. total)
8. North Carolina — 91,300 nurses (3.4 percent of the U.S. total)
9. Michigan — 89,670 nurses (3.3 percent of the U.S. total)
10. Massachusetts — 87,040 nurses (3.2 percent of the U.S. total)
11. New Jersey — 78,180 nurses (2.9 percent of the U.S. total)
12. Missouri — 67,630 nurses (2.5 percent of the U.S. total)
13. Georgia — 65,240 nurses (2.4 percent of the U.S. total)
14. Virginia — 62,210 nurses (2.3 percent of the U.S. total)
15. Indiana — 61,150 nurses (2.2 percent of the U.S. total)
