Reeves County Memorial, unlike many rural hospitals, is not struggling to attract patients, but successful collections are on the decline. The hospital district treats all emergency room patients before asking if they can pay for care, leaving Reeves County Memorial vulnerable to losses when patients don’t pay.
The hospital expects a $3 million shortfall this year, up from $2.8 million in 2009. To combat the losses, hospital district board members are considering a seven-cent tax increase for local residents.
