SEIU Alleges Emanuel Medical Center in California Discouraged Union Membership

The Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging administrators at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, Calif., have engaged in unfair labor practices, according to a Modesto Bee report.

The SEIU alleged Emanuel officials held required meetings where "employees were intimidated, and [administrators] told workers the hospital would close if they voted for union membership," according to the report. In response, the hospital said no laws were broken, and officials will cooperate fully with the NLRB.

The NLRB's investigation temporarily canceled a union vote at the hospital. Roughly 400 service workers were eligible to vote for potential union membership, according to the report.

In November, the 209-bed hospital laid off 24 employees due to reduced reimbursement and low patient volume. Emanuel is currently in merger talks with Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare as well.
