The strategy represents a national trend in which hospitals are moving away from LPNs and focusing more on registered nurses for patients demanding higher levels of complex care. LPNs work under the supervision of RNs after they complete a 12-month to 18-month program and pass a nationally standardized licensing exam.
In total, Salem Hospital has eliminated roughly 20 inpatient LPN positions during the last several years, according to the report. The hospital says LPNs are encouraged to go back to school to become RNs through its tuition reimbursement programs.
